Which ski resort is right for you?

Not every great ski resort is right for you. Here is how to choose — in the order that settles it fastest — with worked examples from the same data SkiDomain matches on.

1. The mountain first, then the village

A ski area and the village you sleep in are two decisions. On Ski Arlberg the lift pass is the same everywhere, but Lech scores 9 on luxury and service where Warth scores 7 — while Warth matches Lech for families (8 against 8). In Les 3 Vallées, palace-hotel Courchevel 1850 scores 9 on luxury; La Tania, across the same lifts, scores 9 for families. Choose the mountain for your skiing, then the village for your week.

2. Be honest about your group

Mixed-ability groups need two things: terrain for everyone, and a way to meet up during the day. Ski Arlberg serves mixed groups well (8 of 9) but scores only 3 on regrouping; Les 3 Vallées scores 9 and 6. If your party spans first-timers to experts, weigh regrouping as heavily as the piste map.

3. Snow you can count on, for a week booked months ahead

Average snowfall is the wrong number. What matters is the chance of good skiing in the week you book months ahead: altitude, aspect, snowmaking and consistency. Matterhorn Ski Paradise and Niseko United score 9 and 9; Sella Ronda / Dolomiti Superski core scores 5 — low, and dependent on excellent snowmaking — and Whistler Blackcomb 5, deep but wet lower down in a bad week.

4. How far you will travel

On a short trip, every hour of transfer comes out of your skiing. Portes du Soleil is about 1 h from Geneva (GVA); Les 3 Vallées about 3 h from Geneva (GVA); Matterhorn Ski Paradise about 3 h from Zurich (ZRH), door to door.

5. The pass you already hold

An Epic or Ikon Pass can fund a European week — or not, if the allocation is three days with conditions. Read where your Epic Pass works in Europe and the best Ikon destinations before you choose.

6. The week off the snow

Dining, evenings and the days someone doesn’t ski decide how the week feels. Zermatt scores 9 for non-skiers; Ortisei, in the Sella Ronda / Dolomiti Superski core, 9. The Sella Ronda scores 9 on dining — and 3 on steep terrain, which is the honest trade.

Let SkiDomain do the weighing. Tell it who is going, how well you ski, when, and what matters; it rules out what cannot work, scores 69 ski areas and 178 villages against the rest, and explains its answer.
