  • The best mountain restaurants in the Alps.
  • Ladin village, not resort.
  • Gentle terrain; the honest weakness.
Stay Hotel La Perla (5★, the Costa family's institution); Hotel Sassongher (5★, the castle above the village); Hotel Col Alto (4★S, spa, centre)
Eat La Stüa de Michil at La Perla (Michelin star); Rifugio Col Alt on the mountain (lunch, book); Ütia de Bioch (Ladin classics)
Marc’s tip
The Sella Ronda starts here, and Corvara is its friendliest base — gentle pistes at the door, the Hidden Valley run to Armentarola by horse-drawn tow, and the Ladin kitchen. Colfosco is quieter, five minutes up the road.

  • The Rosa Alpina.
  • The valley of restaurants.
  • Gentle; the honest weakness.
Stay Rosa Alpina (5★, Aman-managed, the address); Hotel Ciasa Salares (4★S, the wine cellar, the Wieser family); Hotel Fanes (4★S, spa, family)
Eat La Stüa de Michil in Corvara (Michelin star, ten minutes); the Rosa Alpina's restaurant; Ciasa Salares' cellar; Rifugio Scotoni (the Hidden Valley lunch)
Marc’s tip
Alta Badia's quiet, smart hamlet — the Rosa Alpina, the Hidden Valley from the Lagazuoi, the Armentarola horse-tow home, and Corvara's Sella Ronda ten minutes away. The Dolomites' best small-hotel village.

  • The Gran Risa.
  • Alta Badia.
  • The honest trade-off.
Stay Hotel Ciasa Antines (4★S, spa); Hotel Christiania (4★S); Hotel Ladinia (family)
Eat Porcino in Badia (Michelin star, new entry); La Stüa de Michil in Corvara (star, five minutes); Ütia Las Vegas on the Piz La Ila (lunch)
Marc’s tip
The Gran Risa World Cup run to the village — the steepest thing in Alta Badia — and the Piz La Ila lifts into the gentle plateau above, with the Sella Ronda from Corvara five minutes on. The valley's sportiest base, still Ladin and still quiet.

  • 1,200 km of perfect corduroy on one pass.
  • Ladin villages and the Dolomites as backdrop.
  • Low and dependent on snowmaking, which is excellent.
Stay Alpenroyal (5★, spa, the top choice); Hotel Tyrol (4★S, gardens, Gardena classic); Hotel Oswald (4★, centre, family-run)
Eat Alpenroyal Gourmet (Michelin star); Suinsom at the Tyrol (star, creative Ladin-alpine); Anna Stuben in Ortisei (star); Rifugio Emilio Comici on the mountain (lunch)
Marc’s tip
Ride the Sella Ronda clockwise on the first day to learn the circuit; ski Seceda for the view and Ciampinoi for the descents. Ortisei is the prettier town, Selva the better lift access.

  • The Dolomites' prettiest town.
  • The Cavallino Bianco and the Alpe di Siusi.
  • Gentle terrain; the honest weakness.
Stay Gardena Grödnerhof (5★, the Ortisei institution, spa); Adler Spa Resort Dolomiti (5★, the spa resort, family); Hotel Cavallino Bianco (4★S, the family hotel — children's programme all day)
Eat Anna Stuben at the Gardena Grödnerhof (Michelin star); Tubladel (Ladin classics); the Sofie Hütte on the Alpe di Siusi (lunch)
Marc’s tip
The prettiest town in the Dolomites — a pedestrian centre of painted houses and woodcarvers, the Seceda cable car for the view of the Odle, and the Alpe di Siusi's gentle plateau for the family. The Sella Ronda starts from Selva, fifteen minutes up; Ortisei is the town to sleep in.

  • The Portavescovo and the Marmolada.
  • North-facing, the circuit's best.
  • The honest weakness.
Stay Hotel Sport Arabba (4★S, the reference, at the lifts); Hotel Portavescovo (4★, on the square); Hotel Evaldo (4★, spa)
Eat The Sport's dining room; Rifugio Luigi Gorza on the Portavescovo at 2,478 m (lunch); the Portavescovo's stube
Marc’s tip
The Sella Ronda's steep, north-facing corner — the Portavescovo's 2,478 m and the Marmolada glacier next door, the best snow and the hardest pistes on the circuit, and a small, plain village. For skiers; Corvara and Selva for charm.

This village’s holiday scores are under review, so they are not shown here; it is still in the matcher.
  • The Sella Ronda at Fassa prices.
  • The liveliest village on the circuit.
  • Low; the honest trade-off.
Stay Hotel Croce Bianca (4★S, the Fassa classic, spa); Hotel Astoria (4★, family)
Eat The Croce Bianca's Wine & Dine; El Paél (Ladin); Rifugio Belvedere at the top of the gondola
Marc’s tip
The Sella Ronda's Trentino side — the Belvedere gondola from the town, the Marmolada across the valley, and the Val di Fassa's lively, Italian, family-priced villages strung down the road. The value entry to the circuit; a real town with an evening.
