When does the whole ski area open? First lifts versus the full linked area, 2026/27

51 of the 69 areas have published both ends of the window in which the whole linked area runs (as of 3 October 2026). First lifts come before that window in 26 of them, by two to eight weeks in 19; the earliest is Sölden on 25 Sep, the earliest whole area Sölden on 12 Nov. By Thanksgiving 12 whole areas are scheduled open and 14 more have first lifts only; by Christmas 63; at Easter 50, with 12 more open but without a published closing date.

“Open from 28 November” rarely means the whole mountain. Most areas start with one sector and link the rest over the following weeks, and the last sector runs on after the link has closed. This study separates the three dates for every area the matcher covers, from the operators’ own pages, so that an early or late week can be planned against the right one.

What the dates show

• 51 areas have published both ends of their full window, 14 have published one end (Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Chamonix Mont-Blanc Valley, Deer Valley, Furano, Hafjell, Ischgl–Samnaun, Jackson Hole, Palisades Tahoe, Park City Mountain, SkiBig3, Steamboat, Vail and Whistler Blackcomb) and four none yet (Cortina d'Ampezzo, Mammoth Mountain, Shiga Kogen and Skirama Dolomiti). Whole-area windows run a median 121 days; from first lifts to the last sector, a median 141 days.
• First lifts come before the whole area in 26 of the 51: by a week or less in six, by two to eight weeks in 19 (the longest: Engelberg-Titlis 56 days, Zell am See–Kaprun 55 days, Verbier 4 Vallées 49 days, Sölden 48 days, Matterhorn Ski Paradise 35 days and Andermatt–Sedrun 35 days; 13 more between 14 and 34 days); longer still at Engadin St. Moritz, 63 days (first lifts 17 Oct). In 21 the first day of skiing is the day the whole area opens.
• Before December, 16 whole areas are scheduled open (Big Sky, Courmayeur Mont Blanc, Kiroro, LAAX, Les Deux Alpes, Livigno, Matterhorn Ski Paradise, Monterosa Ski, Niseko United, Nozawa Onsen, Obergurgl–Hochgurgl, Rusutsu, Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang, Sölden, Tignes–Val d'Isère and Tremblant). In Europe the first whole area is Sölden on 12 Nov; half of Europe’s whole areas link up between 4 Dec and 19 Dec.
• The last sector outlives the whole area in 29: by the most at Hakuba Valley (37 days, to 5 May), Jungfrau Ski Region (34 days, to 2 May), Niseko United (31 days, to 5 May) and Engadin St. Moritz (28 days, to 2 May). The latest whole area closes 5 May (Kiroro); the last lifts of all turn on 30 May (Les Deux Alpes).

Open on 26 Nov: Beaver Creek, Big Sky, Breckenridge, Ischgl–Samnaun, Obergurgl–Hochgurgl, Palisades Tahoe, Park City Mountain, Sölden, Steamboat, Tremblant, Vail and Whistler Blackcomb.

Christmas Day, 25 December 2026. 63 whole areas are scheduled open (Europe 44; North America 13; Japan 6); two more have first lifts only (Furano and SkiBig3); four with no published date to answer from (Cortina d'Ampezzo, Mammoth Mountain, Shiga Kogen and Skirama Dolomiti).

Easter Sunday, 28 March 2027. 50 whole areas are scheduled open (Europe 40; North America 4; Japan 6); two more have first lifts only (Furano and SkiBig3); one past the whole-area window with a sector still running (Évasion Mont-Blanc (Megève)); 12 open with no published closing date (Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Chamonix Mont-Blanc Valley, Deer Valley, Hafjell, Ischgl–Samnaun, Jackson Hole, Palisades Tahoe, Park City Mountain, Steamboat, Vail and Whistler Blackcomb); four with no published date to answer from (Cortina d'Ampezzo, Mammoth Mountain, Shiga Kogen and Skirama Dolomiti).

How this was measured

Three dates per area, all from the operator. First lifts: the first day any sector of the area is scheduled to run, glaciers and weekend openings included. The full linked area: the operator’s scheduled period in which the core linked sectors are intended to operate together, from the day the last core sector opens to the day the first core sector closes, with no guarantee of every lift or piste on any day. The last sector: the last day any sector is scheduled to run. Where the operator attaches a word to a date (target, tentative, provisional, expected) it is shown.

What counts as published. A date on the operator’s own site or the official tourism site, read on the check date and linked below. A date the operator has not published is not shown, not even as an estimate, and the area is kept out of the counts that need it; it is listed as “not yet published”. 51 of the 69 areas have both ends published, 14 one end, four neither. Dates were read on 2 October 2026 for 59 areas, 28 August 2026 for eight areas and 3 October 2026 for Chamonix Mont-Blanc Valley and Courmayeur Mont Blanc; the next check is 1 December 2026, when the late publishers usually have their dates up. For Thanksgiving and Christmas, an area with a published opening and no published closing counts as open, since no published closing in the set falls before mid-March; at Easter such areas are listed separately.

What is not measured. Snow, lift counts on the day, partial openings and weather closures. Every date here is a schedule; the operators’ pages carry the live status.
