Zermatt or St. Moritz?

The two most famous names in Swiss skiing — and almost opposites once you look closely.

Switzerland’s two most famous ski addresses, and almost opposites once you look closely.

The mountain

Zermatt is the bigger skiing: to 3,883 m, snow-sure into May, the Matterhorn in every photograph, and Italy across the ridge for lunch. St. Moritz skis beautifully — Corviglia’s groomed boulevards, Corvatsch’s glacier light — but the mountain is the setting, not the plot.

The village

Zermatt is car-free, vertical, alpine — electric taxis, larch chalets, a mountaineering soul under the five-star surface. St. Moritz is a resort town of grand hotels around a frozen lake: Badrutt’s, the Kulm, Suvretta House — plus White Turf races and the snow polo in season. One is a mountain village with palaces; the other is a palace district with mountains.

The dinner

Two-star cooking in both: After Seven in Zermatt (plus Chez Vrony’s starred farmhouse on the piste); Ecco and Da Vittorio in St. Moritz, with Talvo in Champfèr. St. Moritz edges the formal roll-call; Zermatt wins mountain lunches outright.

The verdict

Choose Zermatt if the skiing leads: bigger, higher, longer season, and the greatest backdrop in the sport. Choose St. Moritz if the week is really about the hotel, the lake, the season’s social calendar — with very good skiing attached. Couples who ski hard: Zermatt. A milestone birthday with non-skiers in the party: St. Moritz, and it isn’t close — the non-ski life (Ovaverva spa, Muottas Muragl, the shops, the events) is the best in the Alps.
