Lech or St. Anton?

Same lift ticket, fifteen minutes apart, and two entirely different ideas of a perfect week.

Same mountain range, same lift ticket, 15 minutes apart — and two of the most different ski holidays in the Alps. This is the question our matcher is asked more than almost any other, so here is the honest version.

The villages

Lech is the prettiest village on the Arlberg: car-light, walkable, more five-star beds per resident than anywhere else in Austria, quiet by ten. Oberlech, above it, is ski-in/ski-out and reached by cable car.

St. Anton is a real town with a pedestrian main street, serious nightlife, and the most famous après strip in the world on its home run. It is louder, younger at the edges, and prouder of it.

The skiing

The ticket covers both, so the question is what is outside your door. St. Anton’s side is the steeper: the Valluga, Schindler Kar, the long legitimate blacks. Lech’s side is the great groomed cruising — wide, sunny, immaculately prepared — with world-class off-piste guiding when you want it. Strong skiers are happy in both; mixed groups are usually happier in Lech.

The dinner

Lech: Griggeler Stuba in Oberlech and the Rote Wand Chef’s Table in Zug both hold two Michelin stars, with La Fenice new to the guide. St. Anton answers with the two-star Tannenhof and two one-star rooms. Nobody loses here; Lech’s tables are the more storied, St. Anton’s the better value.

The verdict

Choose Lech for a polished, quiet, hotel-led week — couples, families with a budget, anyone for whom the village is half the holiday. Choose St. Anton if the skiing bell curve of your group tilts expert and the evening should have a pulse. And if you are torn: stay in Lech, ski to St. Anton for the day, and take the bus home after one Mooserwirt round too many.
