Courchevel 1850
The most expensive ski village in France and unembarrassed about it: palace hotels, Le 1947’s three Michelin stars plus a constellation of starred rooms, boutiques you recognise from Paris. The skiing out of the door is superb and immaculately groomed. If the trip is a statement, this is the stage. The honest trade-off: at Christmas and February half-term the prices are operatic.
Courchevel Moriond 1650
Ten minutes down the hill, the sunny side of the same lift system, at a fraction of the price. A proper French resort village — good bakeries, family hotels, the Aquamotion pool — with 1850’s restaurants a free bus away. The quiet recommendation for families who want the 3 Vallées without the theatre.
Méribel
The chalet village in the middle of everything — geographically the best base in the valley for skiing all three valleys, English-speaking to a fault, lively without being a party town, with L’Ekrin’s Michelin star at Le Kaïla. Architecture rules keep it wood-clad and handsome. The trade-off: it is the least French of the three, and the village sprawls along its road.
1850 for the milestone trip, the palace hotel, the shortest walk to perfect pistes. 1650 for families and value on the same mountain. Méribel for mixed groups who will actually ski all three valleys and want the chalet evening. And Saint-Martin-de-Belleville — the fourth answer nobody asks about — for the prettiest village and La Bouitte’s Michelin-starred farmhouse, if quiet is the point.
